Eat Like a Local – a Shanghai Foodie Adventure

April 16, 2015 Shanghai

Dumpling Steamers
Your dumplings await, m’lady

Shanghai’s foodie credentials have never been more prolific – featuring ever higher on ‘Best Restaurant’ lists and in the glossy write-ups in international travel mags. But of course that’s just a tiny part of the story – the vast majority of locals rarely make the trek to the Bund for fine dining, and why would they, when some of the best food in the city comes from a hole in the wall?

That’s right, the food we’d happily pole-vault the Great Wall of China for is in fact much more local. There are just a few things you need to experience it: an empty stomach, a willingness to veer off the beaten track, and, with nary a word of English spoken in most tiny local establishments (let alone written), a lot of guidance is key. Enter Bespoke and our foodie expert: an experienced, well-connected food critic who knows every culinary corner of the city. Roll up your sleeves and prepare to jostle for a red plastic stool – we’re taking you local.

A Bluffers Guide To Craft Beer In Beijing

February 12, 2015 Beijing

tsingtao-china-web
Sorry Tsingtao, there’s a new sheriff in town.

Take a hike, Tsingtao! Be gone, Bud Light! Err… skedaddle, Skol! Yep, drinkers around the world are turning their backs on big brand beers and celebrating the rise of the craft brew. In China beer traditionally means light lager with an even lighter price tag, but craft ales have finally caught on in the capital. These days everyone has an opinion on what beer to drink and where to drink it (including us), so we’ve put together this guide for incoming visitors, to help you look like you know the score when it comes to craft beer in Beijing. Cheers!

Great Leap Brewing

Three-Door-Tripel
A post-millennial totem of the enlightened self. Or just a beer.

The thirsty pioneers who started it all. Way back in the dark days of 2009 it was a single brew – the now legendary Pale Ale No. 6 – sold from a trestle table at the 798 Art District. Fast forward five years and they’ve got three venues, a line-up of over 20 beers and have helped steward the scene to maturity with everything from beer festivals to homebrew classes. Their success isn’t just by virtue of being first; it’s down to the single-minded ambition of the founders, American-born Carl and Chinese partner Liu Fang, who have a knack of seeing the bigger picture while putting all those little details in line. And making exceedingly tasty beer, of course.

Beijing's Best Boutiques and CafesHouhai Lake is hardly known for its hip and happening boutiques – but one woman plans to change all that.

Yes that’s right. She may be pintsized, but Guo Yang Yang is a lady on a mission. Thanks to her great connections (and the help of a small group of creative luxury lovers), Lotus Lane is going to get a BIG makeover in the next 18 months.

Where To Eat and Drink Near The Forbidden City

October 14, 2014 Beijing

Cocktails and vistas on the Emperor Hotel’s terrace bar.

Nothing works up an appetite like a hike through the world’s largest palace complex. But finding somewhere to eat and drink afterwards isn’t easy. The Forbidden City is hemmed in by state buildings, touristy shops, exclusive residential compounds, and Tiananmen Square, the world’s largest (restaurant-free) concrete space. But never fear, Bespoke is here to help!

Slap Up Lunch: Temple Restaurant Beijing

Beijing’s best western restaurant is a 10-15 minute walk from the north gate of the Forbidden City. Best of all, TRB’s set lunch deal is one of Beijing’s foodie bargains: three courses of European-inspired fine dining with lots of tasty extras like their divine cheese puffs and homemade marshmallows, for 135 RMB+15% (4 courses for 188 RMB). Weary legs? Ask the waiter to arrange for the restaurant’s private car to take you back to your hotel, at a fraction over local taxi prices!

Booze Beijing – The World’s First Baijiu Bar

September 10, 2014 Beijing

P9090442

Through an unmarked entrance on a quiet alleyway, a quartet of foreigners have done the unthinkable by opening (they claim) the first dedicated Baijiu Bar in the world. Baijiu, literally “white liquor”, refers to China’s best loved tipple, a clear firewater older than Buddhism with a kick like a cross camel.
