Is the Shanghai Tower a little bit too obvious for your taste? Thanks to a less than stringent attitude to health and safety, Shanghai has plenty more quirky, low key ways to get your pulse racing. Here are a handful of our favorites that you might not have tried yet.
Cannon-Fresh Popcorn
You might think of popcorn as a somewhat bland, low calorie snack. Fair enough but know this – in Shanghai’s it’s made on the street. In high pressure cannons. Each afternoon Mr. Du sits on Julu Road and fires up his ancient machine until it literally explodes, shaking houses and sending small children running each time a fresh batch is ready. A good way to get noticed, and a bargain at 5 RMB per bag.
Mr. Du and his popcorn can be found at the corner of Julu Lu and Shaanxi Nan Lu most afternoons.
Ride the Slide Trend
It all started when cute Austrian café Daliah installed a slide to allow tipsy punters to maneuver between their two floors. The next thing we knew slides were officially a thing and the Printemps mall in Pudong was building a 5 story chute for VIP customers to enjoy. After several months of safety checks it finally opened to the public just days ago. If you dare go on this thing you’re a bigger man than Bespoke! Best bit? The scariest ride of your life is totally free.
Printemps Pudong is located at 928 Pujian Road in Pudong New District.
‘Jump around, Jump around’
Shanghai’s not a great sporting city. We’re never going to host the Olympics (are we?). Still, when we do want to get active we know how to do it in style. The idea of stitching 30 trampolines together then putting them in a giant warehouse and allowing people to risk life and broken limb bouncing all over them seems like a kid’s crazy fantasy, doesn’t it? Luckily for us, it’s real and it’s wonderful.
Jump 360 is at 1480 Jidi Lu in Minhang. Tel (+86) 131-6625-0458.
