Suzhou’s Quietest Gardens

September 10, 2015 Shanghai

Couple's Retreat Rocks
Elegant simplicity at The Couple’s Retreat Garden.

Suzhou’s a lovely city, in that we have no doubt, but the superlative-laden tourist literature touting it’s heavenly beauty can set expectations unrealistically high. Sure, we love The Humble Administrator’s Garden and the Master of the Nets as much as the next visitor, but packed with megaphone-wielding tour guides herding their charges from one corner to another, you’ll hardly experience the gardens in the tranquility that their designers surely intended. And that’s before we even start on the crazy ticket prices. Team Bespoke has been scouring the backstreets of Suzhou and is happy to offer a couple of tips for those looking for a more peaceful day out.

The Couple’s Retreat Garden (Ou Yuan)

On the east side of the old city and surrounded by canals and dating back to the late 19th Century, this is one of the city’s younger gardens and feels wonderfully isolated from the tourist crowds elsewhere. This is a great place to learn the basics of Chinese garden design before you tackle larger spots. Whilst it’s certainly possible to wander the gardens independently, a local guide can add a huge amount to your visit, explaining the complex symbolism that lies behind almost every detail in these splendid complexes. (The Couple’s Retreat Garden, 6 Xiaoxinqiao Lane. 20RMB per person)

Egg: Shanghai’s Best New Breakfast Spot

June 29, 2015 Shanghai

Shaakshouka
Put an egg on it? Done!

We’ve been following new (all day) breakfast eatery Egg on Instagram (@eggshanghai) for a while and their mouthwatering snapshots have been giving us serious morning hunger pangs! You can imagine, then, our excitement when we discovered that their newly-opened space was a mere hop, skip and a jump away from Bespoke HQ.

Gaze out on the Pacific whilst you eat. OK, OK so it’s actually ‘Project Wine’ but close enough, right? (Photo: Denise Lai)

Located just up the street from Shanghai’s famous ‘breakfast junction’ on Xiangyang Lu, where street vendors churn out more traditionally Chinese morning options like youtiao and congyoubing, Egg’s approach is a fresher and, we’d wager, more nutritious one. Opened by US expat Camden Hauge and a friendly team, the space is bright, airy and has, dare we say it, the feel of a beachside Sydney café. Call us old-fashioned, but we’re just missing the spread of Sunday papers to read as we graze (and yes, we have heard of iPads, thank you).

Nanjing Art Deco Weekender- Join Us!

June 29, 2015 Shanghai

Mei Ling Gong 2

Sure, you’ve spent your weekends exploring the former French Concession and reckon you know your ‘Shanghai Deco’? That’s great, history buff, but what you are probably less familiar with is the fact that our nearby neighbor Nanjing boasts her own collection of fabulous 20s and 30s architecture awaiting your discovery. Even better, Bespoke and the folks at Historic Shanghai are offering you the chance to join us on a neat little weekender this coming July 4th and 5th.

A Trend Spotter’s Guide to Shanghai Plum Rain Season

June 29, 2015 Shanghai

Ah, ‘Plum Rain’…whoever came up with the misleadingly poetic moniker for the miserable three week stretch of humid heat and nonstop rainfall that graces us each June was clearly some kind of ancient marketing genius. Still, the denizens of Shanghai are nothing if not an adaptable bunch and, ever keen to retain their reputation as China’s most fashion forward urbanites, respond with an impressive display of rainwear. Bespoke’s former French Concession perch gives us the perfect vantage point from which to view the annual fashion parade, and for those interested in updating their wardrobes, we’ve included information on where you can ‘get the look’ yourself.

The lesser-spotted 'urban camel'.

The Two-Man Poncho
Attention thrillseekers, this one is for you! Dodging several lanes of traffic in a torrential downpour not quite risky enough for you? Then consider rendering effective control of your vehicle almost impossible by swaddling yourself and a passenger of choice in thick plastic! The ‘urban camel’, as we like to refer to it, is the bastard child of the traditional bicycle poncho and the ‘couples clothing’ we all know and, ahem, love. Get the look!
