Egg: Shanghai’s Best New Breakfast Spot

June 29, 2015 Shanghai

Shaakshouka
Put an egg on it? Done!

We’ve been following new (all day) breakfast eatery Egg on Instagram (@eggshanghai) for a while and their mouthwatering snapshots have been giving us serious morning hunger pangs! You can imagine, then, our excitement when we discovered that their newly-opened space was a mere hop, skip and a jump away from Bespoke HQ.

Located just up the street from Shanghai’s famous ‘breakfast junction’ on Xiangyang Lu, where street vendors churn out more traditionally Chinese morning options like youtiao and congyoubing, Egg’s approach is a fresher and, we’d wager, more nutritious one. Opened by US expat Camden Hauge and a friendly team, the space is bright, airy and has, dare we say it, the feel of a beachside Sydney café. Call us old-fashioned, but we’re just missing the spread of Sunday papers to read as we graze (and yes, we have heard of iPads, thank you).

Hot Pot For The Hip at Red Bowl

May 29, 2015 Beijing

Red Bowl 1
Follow this sign

Red Bowl, the latest Chinese restaurant from the Rosewood hotel’s impressive stable, serves hot pot with a difference. The sleek space offers an edgier alternative to the well-worn charms of Sanlitun late-night stalwart Haidilao and an upmarket change for when Guijie (Ghost Street) seems at its most ghoulish.

Hot pot starts with the sauce and Red Pot offers a tomorrow-friendly (aka not that spicy) Spicy Sichuan, seafood congee, Beijing traditional, wild mushroom and a tomato/potato pairing. These can also be picked as half-and-half combinations in a split pot, if you’re not rocking an individual pot.

Copper by TRB: A New Venue That’s Under The Wire

May 27, 2015 Beijing

Copper TRB5
The ground floor

Copper by TRB, the new event and cultural space from Beijing’s award-winning TRB restaurant group has got us a little hot under the collar.

Housed in a former copper-wiring factory, hence the name, the renovated venue is located behind a private entrance down a sleepy hutong and offers a sense of exclusivity while remaining a truly Beijing experience.

Spring Eats – POP Brasserie and Wishbone

April 30, 2015 Shanghai

Spring has arrived with a bang in Shanghai, so Team Bespoke has been out pounding the streets before the full heat of summer arrives to try out the city’s newest restaurants. Hey, it’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it…

Beautifully Prensented Dishes at POP
Beautifully presented dishes at POP American Brasserie

First out of the blocks comes POP American Brasserie. Replacing former tenant New Heights, POP seems determined to make a splash with bold branding and beautifully presented dishes. While the menu of American classics – think Caesar salads, New England clam chowders and plenty of fresh seafood choices – plays it pretty safe, the abundance of colours and fresh flowers used to present the dishes make for a lovely seasonal touch that certainly brightened up our lunch.

Eat Like a Local – a Shanghai Foodie Adventure

April 16, 2015 Shanghai

Dumpling Steamers
Your dumplings await, m’lady

Shanghai’s foodie credentials have never been more prolific – featuring ever higher on ‘Best Restaurant’ lists and in the glossy write-ups in international travel mags. But of course that’s just a tiny part of the story – the vast majority of locals rarely make the trek to the Bund for fine dining, and why would they, when some of the best food in the city comes from a hole in the wall?

That’s right, the food we’d happily pole-vault the Great Wall of China for is in fact much more local. There are just a few things you need to experience it: an empty stomach, a willingness to veer off the beaten track, and, with nary a word of English spoken in most tiny local establishments (let alone written), a lot of guidance is key. Enter Bespoke and our foodie expert: an experienced, well-connected food critic who knows every culinary corner of the city. Roll up your sleeves and prepare to jostle for a red plastic stool – we’re taking you local.

Bespoke’s Advanced Peking Duck Spotter’s Guide

March 6, 2015 Beijing

l_1859_pancake-duck-00244258-CUT1

We’ll leave it to the guidebooks to quack on about the merits of world famous Peking duck restaurants like Dadong, Duck de Chine, and the state-owned behemoth that is Quanjude. You are here because you are an advanced duck lover and you want to experience something deliciously different. These lesser-known Peking ducks are shy birds, not easily spotted. But we’ll show you how.
