The Real Reason Why Bespoke Can Focus On Its Clients

June 4, 2015 Beijing

We here at Bespoke like to think we’re pretty darn good at dealing with whatever life has to throw at us but that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t appreciate a little help once in a while. Step forward WeChat Secretary to offer help to us in a way that only Chinese social media knows how, by doing everything a normal secretary would do without the holiday expectations of a full-time employee.

If they want to make it easier for us to do our jobs when it comes to a demanding visitor, why the heck not? We decided to put them to the test with a couple of very real but unusual requests from the world of music. Up first, enter the lavatorial demands of everyone’s favourite diva, Beyonce Giselle Knowles.

Damon Does The Wall

June 4, 2015 Beijing

Matt Damon Great Wall
We can’t show you the real photos but you can imagine that Matt Damon on the Great Wall looks a little something like this

Celebrity guest of the month Matt Damon used Bespoke to take his family to the Great Wall in May, choosing the ever-popular Mutianyu section to impress his wife and four children (yes, four!)

And while the Mutianyu section’s new policy of forcing visitors to walk along a 700m-long shopping street and board a public bus has made the section more touristy in recent months, thanks to Bespoke, the Damon Clan was able to avoid both. A special treat afforded to all of Bespoke’s customers – not just those with Oscars.

Hot Pot For The Hip at Red Bowl

May 29, 2015 Beijing

Red Bowl 1
Follow this sign

Red Bowl, the latest Chinese restaurant from the Rosewood hotel’s impressive stable, serves hot pot with a difference. The sleek space offers an edgier alternative to the well-worn charms of Sanlitun late-night stalwart Haidilao and an upmarket change for when Guijie (Ghost Street) seems at its most ghoulish.

Hot pot starts with the sauce and Red Pot offers a tomorrow-friendly (aka not that spicy) Spicy Sichuan, seafood congee, Beijing traditional, wild mushroom and a tomato/potato pairing. These can also be picked as half-and-half combinations in a split pot, if you’re not rocking an individual pot.

Copper by TRB: A New Venue That’s Under The Wire

May 27, 2015 Beijing

Copper TRB5

Copper by TRB, the new event and cultural space from Beijing’s award-winning TRB restaurant group has got us a little hot under the collar.

Housed in a former copper-wiring factory, hence the name, the renovated venue is located behind a private entrance down a sleepy hutong and offers a sense of exclusivity while remaining a truly Beijing experience.

Horses for courses

Introducing the newest venue to, erm, pop up on Bespoke Beijing’s Hidden Beijing Boutique Experience, we’re delighted to introduce the delights of Pop-Up Beijing in Sanlitun. This new shop is located over two levels in the newly buzzing Sanlitun No. 4 Courtyard and finally offers a chance to buy the kinds of objets d’art you’d normally have to schlep to the sprawling Gaobeidian furniture street for right here in the city.

POP-UP BEIJING 14
The light stuff

There’s something for everyone and every price point, whether you are looking for a gift to take back home or you’re looking for ways to brighten up your apartment that doesn’t involve the hassle of IKEA or the haggling of Panjiayuan. Items range from ceramic cups – made in Jingdezhen, China’s home of pottery – from 28-30RMB to full-scale Tiananmen chests that are priced nearer the 8,000RMB mark.

New Tour! The Story of Communism in China

March 16, 2015 Beijing

He’s got his ticket, have you?

Communism is a mighty big subject. And a mighty touchy one too, if you decide to get into a discussion about its merits in China. But here at Bespoke we don’t shy away from the meaty topics. Which is why we’re so excited about our new tour: The Story of Communism in China. Join Bespoke’s experienced local guide and China history expert as he tells the country’s Communist story – from The Party’s surprising roots in radical academic journal La Jeunesse, to the rise of its most important player: Mao Zedong.

Tiananmen Gate at Night
Today. But what about yesterday? Where did it all begin?

You’ll visit the university where Mao got his first job as a librarian; hear the story of the incredible Soong Sisters, whose love lives would go on to shape modern China; and stand in the shadow of Mao’s portrait as you learn how Stalin’s big snub pushed the Great Leader to his limit. Crucially, this tour is led by a local Chinese history expert, who positively relishes answering those tricky questions you’ve always been too afraid to ask.
