A Trend Spotter’s Guide to Shanghai Plum Rain Season

June 29, 2015 Shanghai

Ah, ‘Plum Rain’…whoever came up with the misleadingly poetic moniker for the miserable three week stretch of humid heat and nonstop rainfall that graces us each June was clearly some kind of ancient marketing genius. Still, the denizens of Shanghai are nothing if not an adaptable bunch and, ever keen to retain their reputation as China’s most fashion forward urbanites, respond with an impressive display of rainwear. Bespoke’s former French Concession perch gives us the perfect vantage point from which to view the annual fashion parade, and for those interested in updating their wardrobes, we’ve included information on where you can ‘get the look’ yourself.

The Two-Man Poncho
Attention thrillseekers, this one is for you! Dodging several lanes of traffic in a torrential downpour not quite risky enough for you? Then consider rendering effective control of your vehicle almost impossible by swaddling yourself and a passenger of choice in thick plastic! The ‘urban camel’, as we like to refer to it, is the bastard child of the traditional bicycle poncho and the ‘couples clothing’ we all know and, ahem, love. Get the look!

The Real Reason Why Bespoke Can Focus On Its Clients

June 4, 2015 Beijing

We here at Bespoke like to think we’re pretty darn good at dealing with whatever life has to throw at us but that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t appreciate a little help once in a while. Step forward WeChat Secretary to offer help to us in a way that only Chinese social media knows how, by doing everything a normal secretary would do without the holiday expectations of a full-time employee.

If they want to make it easier for us to do our jobs when it comes to a demanding visitor, why the heck not? We decided to put them to the test with a couple of very real but unusual requests from the world of music. Up first, enter the lavatorial demands of everyone’s favourite diva, Beyonce Giselle Knowles.

Sherlock Gets Shanghai’d

April 30, 2015 Shanghai

To say the BBC’s Sherlock adaptation has been a huge hit in China is something of an understatement, its star famously being honored by his legions of Chinese fans with a quirky Chinese nickname (juan fu, or ‘curly fu’ after his hairstyle in the show). So we admit we were more than a tiny bit excited when we were invited to accompany Benedict Cumberbatch and entourage around Shanghai for the evening.

Would the star reciprocate the city’s affection? After all, one local fan was so besotted that she opened a café, 221B Baker Street, dedicated to the man (it’s at 50 Ruijin Er Lu if you must, and yes, we told him about it!).

That Was The Year That Was… Beijing 2014 Review

December 10, 2014 Beijing

With 2014 fading to black, we are each of us another year older and wiser. Well, older, without a doubt. At Bespoke we tend to spend most of the year marching ahead, striving, growing, and eating too much Gung-Ho! Pizza. But as Walter Scott once said, “Look back, and smile on perils past…” (thanks, Brainyquote). So we’ve taken a calm moment to reflect on what was, for us, the year that was… 2014.

October 24, 2014 Beijing

Rules are the key to a harmonious society, especially in Beijing. When someone in authority tells us what to do, we do it. Or at least, we try to understand what to do. We try really hard. Please obey these Chinglish signs.
