We’ve been following new (all day) breakfast eatery Egg on Instagram (@eggshanghai) for a while and their mouthwatering snapshots have been giving us serious morning hunger pangs! You can imagine, then, our excitement when we discovered that their newly-opened space was a mere hop, skip and a jump away from Bespoke HQ.
Located just up the street from Shanghai’s famous ‘breakfast junction’ on Xiangyang Lu, where street vendors churn out more traditionally Chinese morning options like youtiao and congyoubing, Egg’s approach is a fresher and, we’d wager, more nutritious one. Opened by US expat Camden Hauge and a friendly team, the space is bright, airy and has, dare we say it, the feel of a beachside Sydney café. Call us old-fashioned, but we’re just missing the spread of Sunday papers to read as we graze (and yes, we have heard of iPads, thank you).
We’re still working our way through the soft-opening menu of brunchy offerings but our pick so far would have to be the delicious ‘Spring Shakshouka’ which is light enough to feel healthy, but hearty enough to qualify as comfort food. The option to ‘add an egg’ to anything is one that Bespoke will be taking up – though we salute the first person to attempt that with the tasty-looking granola and yoghurt.
The coffee is good and strong too, and with an opening time of 8 a.m. we’re fast losing any reason to patronize the American mega-chains that are increasingly ubiquitous. Welcome to the neighborhood, Egg, we look forward to having you around. Early risers, get yourselves down to Xiangyang Bei Lu and #putaneggonit!
Egg is located at 12 Xiangyang Bei Lu (near Julu Lu) and is currently open 8am–6.30pm. Want to meet Bespoke for a power breakfast? Email us here.
