Nanjing Art Deco: Pop-up Talk & Weekender!

April 21, 2016 Shanghai

The Nanking Decade

Bespoke has teamed up once again with the experts from Historic Shanghai for a one-off Nanjing Art Deco Weekender – and you’re invited! After spending much of last year dodging Nanjing’s security guards, invading period movie theaters and scouring lanes for ‘ziggurats’ and ‘sunbursts’ with Art Deco lovers from across the globe for the World Congress, we decided to do it all again for our friends in Shanghai and beyond. Can’t make the Weekender? We’ll also be holding a talk on April 27th. Read on for more…

‘Deco on the Road’: A Weekender (May 13-15)

Bespoke and Historic Shanghai will be hightailing to Nanjing by bullet train on Friday evening and checking-in to the lovely Intercontinental Nanjing (located at the very top of one of China’s tallest buildings and an architectural landmark in its own right).

We’ll spend the next two days discovering the city’s gorgeous Republican-era architecture with our Historic Shanghai experts. Been to the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum before? We’re willing to place a bet you’ve not checked out Song Meiling’s palatial mansion on Purple Mountain or the gorgeous Art Deco Central Stadium, once the largest in East Asia…

‘The Nanking Decade: 1927–1937’. A Pop-up Talk (April 27)

Think of this as a great little taster for our upcoming weekender in collaboration with Historic Shanghai. Bespoke will be sitting down with leading experts for an introduction to the modernist architecture that emerged during Nanjing’s ten year stint as capital of the Republic of China under President Chiang Kai-shek.

The Weekender departs Shanghai on the evening on Friday, May 13th and returns on the evening of Sunday, May 15th. Tickets cost 3,900RMB per person including train tickets, 2 nights’ accommodation at the Five Star Intercontinental Nanjing hotel, meals and full expert-led touring. Places are limited, so email us here to reserve a spot.

The Talk takes place on Wednesday, April 27th at 19:00 at Old China Hand Style (374 Shaanxi Nan Lu near Fuxing Lu). Entrance is 80 RMB per person including tea or coffee. Email us here to reserve your spot.
