Spring Eats – POP Brasserie and Wishbone

April 30, 2015 Shanghai

Spring has arrived with a bang in Shanghai, so Team Bespoke has been out pounding the streets before the full heat of summer arrives to try out the city’s newest restaurants. Hey, it’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it…

Beautifully Prensented Dishes at POP
Beautifully presented dishes at POP American Brasserie

First out of the blocks comes POP American Brasserie. Replacing former tenant New Heights, POP seems determined to make a splash with bold branding and beautifully presented dishes. While the menu of American classics – think Caesar salads, New England clam chowders and plenty of fresh seafood choices – plays it pretty safe, the abundance of colours and fresh flowers used to present the dishes make for a lovely seasonal touch that certainly brightened up our lunch.

POP American Brassierie Terrace
POP’s fantastic terrace

With friendly, fast service, POP is a great option for those looking for a more casual meal on the Bund – a lunch with friends or a bite before an evening out. The killer blow? The terrace – just opened as of April 1st – is one of the city’s best with fantastic views that span both sides of the Huangpu. We’ll be back when the new bar, boasting its own outdoor space with equally stunning views, is ready to go in May.

Then there’s Wishbone. We’re hugely admiring of restaurants that specialize in a single dish done right – not only does it signal a dedication to quality, but also saves us a lot of time in the ordering process! Roast chicken is the dish of the house, and it is beautifully done: with crispy skin but deliciously tender meat. We swung by Wishbone on it’s opening night and it was so packed that they were completely out of stock – we returned the next day to finally sample the dish along with a few sides including roast potatoes and a tasty country pâté. Our tip? Come with three friends and split an entire bird – this is a dish for sharing.

POP American Brasserie is at 17 Guangdong Road near The Bund. Tel: 021-6321-0909
Wishbone is at 888 Changde Road near Changping Road. Tel: 021-6257-8511
