The original Xixi Bistro was a real Bespoke fave when it opened back in 2015 and its closing left us somewhat bereft – just where were we supposed to get our Shanghai Italian fusion food now? The good news is that Xixi is back and she’s on as fine form as ever, having relocated from scruffy-but-charming Wuyuan Road to some seriously swanky new digs in none other than Xintiandi.
The basic concept remains the same: a sexy space where old Shanghai meets retro Italy, and a selection of dishes which combine local flavors with Mediterranean touches. It could be dismissed as gimmicky, but these guys know their stuff, and the flavor combos are interesting and tasty.
Who would have thought, for example, that Shanghainese cong you bing (scallion pancakes) make a perfect pairing with foie gras mousse? A must order. Elsewhere, the bread in bruschetta is swapped out in favor of ci fan gao (deep fried rice cake) with equally delicious results.
As for the location, Xintiandi’s days of being a quality dining and drinking blackspot may be drawing to a close as the management seems intent on attracting more than tourist traps to the complex.
After dinner cocktail? Head to The Bunker (hidden behind super-healthy Green & Safe) for an Old Fashioned, or across the road for a perfectly mixed Martini at Calix. Delicious Sichuan dining spot Maurya is also spicing up the area with long lines of locals waiting for tables in an area that once had scandalously few Chinese restaurants. There’s life in the old dog yet!
