If you want a great cocktail but aren’t in the mood to navigate the complex world of hidden doorways, vintage whiskies and expensive libations that 2017 bar-going seems to expect of you, then new Jing’an lounge Wonderland might just be the place for you.
Conceived and managed by Shanghai nightlife veteran Johan Holmberg as a ‘living room for friends’, the drinks hit the spot and are affordable too. Try the Mushroom Garden with its gin base and a vegetable garnish that gives an interesting savory punch.
Oh and did we mention the décor? As you might guess from the name, the venue has taken its theme from the Alice books. Think top-hat-shaped light fixtures, a full tea party set up (any cocktail can be supersized and served in china teapots, it turns out) and even a ‘beach’ terrace that spills onto otherwise dreary Xinzha Road. A good choice for those wanting to feel the sand between their toes this summer without actually leaving the city.
Wonderland 1131 Xinzha Lu near Shaanxi Bei Lu.
