A Trend Spotter’s Guide to Shanghai Plum Rain Season

June 29, 2015 Shanghai

Ah, ‘Plum Rain’…whoever came up with the misleadingly poetic moniker for the miserable three week stretch of humid heat and nonstop rainfall that graces us each June was clearly some kind of ancient marketing genius. Still, the denizens of Shanghai are nothing if not an adaptable bunch and, ever keen to retain their reputation as China’s most fashion forward urbanites, respond with an impressive display of rainwear. Bespoke’s former French Concession perch gives us the perfect vantage point from which to view the annual fashion parade, and for those interested in updating their wardrobes, we’ve included information on where you can ‘get the look’ yourself.

The lesser-spotted 'urban camel'.
The lesser-spotted ‘urban camel’.

The Two-Man Poncho
Attention thrillseekers, this one is for you! Dodging several lanes of traffic in a torrential downpour not quite risky enough for you? Then consider rendering effective control of your vehicle almost impossible by swaddling yourself and a passenger of choice in thick plastic! The ‘urban camel’, as we like to refer to it, is the bastard child of the traditional bicycle poncho and the ‘couples clothing’ we all know and, ahem, love. Get the look!

The Real Reason Why Bespoke Can Focus On Its Clients

June 4, 2015 Beijing

We here at Bespoke like to think we’re pretty darn good at dealing with whatever life has to throw at us but that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t appreciate a little help once in a while. Step forward WeChat Secretary to offer help to us in a way that only Chinese social media knows how, by doing everything a normal secretary would do without the holiday expectations of a full-time employee.

If they want to make it easier for us to do our jobs when it comes to a demanding visitor, why the heck not? We decided to put them to the test with a couple of very real but unusual requests from the world of music. Up first, enter the lavatorial demands of everyone’s favourite diva, Beyonce Giselle Knowles.

Damon Does The Wall

June 4, 2015 Beijing

Matt Damon Great Wall
We can’t show you the real photos but you can imagine that Matt Damon on the Great Wall looks a little something like this

Celebrity guest of the month Matt Damon used Bespoke to take his family to the Great Wall in May, choosing the ever-popular Mutianyu section to impress his wife and four children (yes, four!)

And while the Mutianyu section’s new policy of forcing visitors to walk along a 700m-long shopping street and board a public bus has made the section more touristy in recent months, thanks to Bespoke, the Damon Clan was able to avoid both. A special treat afforded to all of Bespoke’s customers – not just those with Oscars.

Hot Pot For The Hip at Red Bowl

May 29, 2015 Beijing

Red Bowl 1
Follow this sign

Red Bowl, the latest Chinese restaurant from the Rosewood hotel’s impressive stable, serves hot pot with a difference. The sleek space offers an edgier alternative to the well-worn charms of Sanlitun late-night stalwart Haidilao and an upmarket change for when Guijie (Ghost Street) seems at its most ghoulish.

Hot pot starts with the sauce and Red Pot offers a tomorrow-friendly (aka not that spicy) Spicy Sichuan, seafood congee, Beijing traditional, wild mushroom and a tomato/potato pairing. These can also be picked as half-and-half combinations in a split pot, if you’re not rocking an individual pot.
